Why is Your String of Hearts Balding or Leggy?

String of Hearts is a succulent trailing vine with heart-shaped green foliage. It is a fast-growing plant perfect for your home or office. The vines can hang down several feet once they are mature. But this plant requires a good amount of light ( I place mine 12 inches away from a south-facing window.)

If your plant is not receiving the necessary light requirements and is in too much shade, you’ll notice that the plant will shoot out longer stems and won’t produce as many leaves. Often times the String of Hearts will start balding on the top or get leggy if it does not receive enough light.

What You Will Need:

Making your String of Heart fuller is quite easy! Today, I’ll show you how to make a fuller plant using only bobby pins or hair pins!

Materials:

  • Bobby pins

  • Your String of Heart (or other trailing plant like the Pothos or Philodendrons)

For this tutorial, I am using my Variegated String of Hearts. It produces pink, green and white splashes which is more ornamental variety of the ordinary green-leafed one! You can find this uncommon Variegated String of Hearts on Etsy by clicking here.

How to Use Bobby Pins Method :

  1. Place the entire vine down to the bare patches, with all the nodes facing down into the soil.

  2. Fasten the vine to the soil using bobby pins (Each node that is in contact with the soil has the potential to grow roots and a new vine.)

  3. Water it occasionally and wait until it starts to root into the soil.

Over time, the vines will root and fill in the head of the plant. You can even cut the newly propagated plant away from the mother plant in about a month or so to produce more String of Hearts!
